Overview
Platinum is a dense, malleable, corrosion resistant precious metal widely used in catalytic converters, jewelry and medical implants.
Properties
It is chemically inert, has excellent catalytic activity for many reactions and forms stable alloys and compounds.
Occurrence and Uses
Used in automotive catalytic converters, chemical catalysts, jewelry, pacemaker components and laboratory equipment.
Isotopes and Safety
Stable isotopes include Pt 190 to Pt 198; platinum compounds are generally low toxicity though some complexes require handling precautions.
