Obstetrics and Gynecology

Overview

OB GYNs provide prenatal care, manage labor and delivery and treat gynecologic conditions including benign and malignant disease. The specialty integrates preventive care, family planning and surgical interventions to support reproductive health. Subspecialties include maternal fetal medicine reproductive endocrinology and gynecologic oncology.

Clinical Practice

Care includes routine prenatal visits, high risk pregnancy management, contraception counseling and surgical procedures from minimally invasive laparoscopy to cesarean delivery. Coordination with neonatology and maternal fetal medicine optimizes perinatal outcomes. Screening and preventive services reduce morbidity.

Procedures and Tools

Procedures include hysterectomy, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and cesarean section and use of ultrasound for fetal assessment. Tools include prenatal screening tests, fetal monitoring and surgical simulation for skill maintenance. Multidisciplinary care supports complex obstetric and oncologic cases.

Training and Roles

OB GYNs complete residency training and may pursue fellowships in subspecialties; certification and surgical volume maintain competence. Many provide community based reproductive health services and participate in public health initiatives. Midlevel providers such as certified nurse midwives collaborate in maternity care.
