Oganesson

Overview

Oganesson is a synthetic, extremely heavy noble gas region element produced in particle accelerators to test the limits of the periodic table.

Properties

Theoretical models predict that strong relativistic effects may give oganesson properties unlike lighter noble gases, possibly showing weak reactivity and high polarizability.

Occurrence and Uses

Produced only in trace amounts for fundamental research into superheavy element stability, relativistic quantum chemistry and nuclear decay.

Isotopes and Safety

Oganesson isotopes are highly radioactive with very short half lives; handling is confined to specialized facilities with remote techniques, shielding and strict radiological protocols.
