Overview
Cobalt is a hard, lustrous metal with important magnetic and catalytic properties and is a component of vitamin B12 in biology.
Properties
It exhibits ferromagnetism in certain alloys, multiple oxidation states and good high temperature strength when alloyed.
Occurrence and Uses
Used in superalloys for turbines, rechargeable battery cathodes, catalysts and medical implants; often produced as a byproduct of nickel and copper mining.
Isotopes and Safety
Stable isotope Co 59 is natural; radioactive Co 60 is used in radiotherapy and industrial radiography and requires strict radiological controls.
