Overview
Bromine is a reddish brown volatile liquid at room temperature and is the only nonmetallic element that is liquid under ambient conditions besides mercury.
Properties
It is highly reactive, forms bromide salts and organic brominated compounds and is a strong oxidizer in many reactions.
Occurrence and Uses
Extracted from brine pools, bromine is used in flame retardants, water treatment, pharmaceuticals and chemical intermediates.
Isotopes and Safety
Stable isotopes Br 79 and Br 81 exist; bromine is corrosive and toxic, requiring careful handling and containment to prevent exposure.
