Krypton

Overview

Krypton is a colorless, odorless noble gas present in trace amounts in the atmosphere and used in specialized lighting and lasers.

Properties

It is chemically inert under most conditions, has low boiling point and produces characteristic spectral lines used in lighting.

Occurrence and Uses

Krypton is used in high intensity discharge lamps, certain lasers and as an insulating gas in high performance windows.

Isotopes and Safety

Stable isotopes include Kr 78 to Kr 86; krypton is nonreactive though radioactive isotopes produced in reactors require radiological controls.
