Overview
Fluorine 18 sodium fluoride is a PET bone imaging agent that localizes to sites of active bone turnover and provides high resolution skeletal imaging.
Properties
Fluoride ion exchanges with hydroxyl groups in hydroxyapatite producing high bone uptake and rapid blood clearance for excellent target to background ratio.
Uses
Used for detection of bone metastases occult fractures and metabolic bone disease with higher sensitivity than conventional bone scintigraphy.
Safety
Radiation exposure is moderate; follow PET center protocols for patient preparation and pregnancy screening.
