Technetium 99m methylene diphosphonate (MDP) is a radiopharmaceutical used for bone scans to detect metastases, fractures and metabolic bone disease.
Properties
Tc 99m labeled phosphate analog localizes to areas of increased osteoblastic activity and emits gamma photons detected by gamma cameras.
Uses
Used for whole body and regional bone scintigraphy, infection imaging in some protocols and preoperative planning in orthopedic cases.
Safety
Radiation exposure is low but present; pregnancy and breastfeeding considerations apply and local nuclear medicine protocols must be followed.
