Phase contrast imaging identified density differences between ink and carbonized papyrus. This allowed researchers to detect writing that was invisible in standard CT scans.

The scans revealed internal layering and folding patterns. This helped reconstruct the scrolls’ original shape and writing sequence.
Text Recovery
Although the scrolls were heavily damaged, phase contrast imaging allowed partial recovery of Greek philosophical texts. The method demonstrated potential for biblical era scrolls damaged by fire.
Preservation Impact
The scrolls remained intact throughout the process, showing that phase contrast imaging can recover text without physical contact.
