Clinical Geneticist

Overview

Clinical geneticists evaluate patients with suspected inherited conditions using family history, physical examination and targeted testing. They interpret genetic test results and guide management and surveillance. They provide counseling on recurrence risk and coordinate multidisciplinary care.

Clinical Practice

They order and interpret chromosomal microarrays, single gene tests and genomic sequencing and integrate results with clinical findings. They collaborate with genetic counselors, surgeons and other specialists for treatment planning. They also participate in newborn screening follow up and rare disease clinics.

Procedures and Tools

Tools include genetic testing platforms, phenotype databases and variant interpretation frameworks. They use multidisciplinary case review and evidence based guidelines for management. Ethical considerations and informed consent are central to practice.

Training and Roles

Clinical geneticists complete medical training and genetics fellowship and often work in academic centers and specialty clinics. They lead diagnostic odysseys and coordinate long term care for complex genetic conditions. Continuing education in genomics and variant interpretation is essential.
