Radiation Safety Officer

Overview

Radiation safety officers (RSOs) develop and oversee radiation safety policies, monitor exposures and ensure compliance with regulatory dose limits and licensing requirements.

Program Responsibilities

RSOs implement monitoring programs, perform shielding assessments, manage dosimetry, investigate incidents and provide staff training on ALARA principles.

Regulatory and Operational Interface

They coordinate with medical physics, clinical departments and regulators for inspections, licensing renewals and corrective actions to maintain safe imaging and therapy operations.

Qualifications and Certification

RSOs usually have backgrounds in medical physics, health physics or radiology with certification and experience in radiation protection and regulatory frameworks.
