Chest PA Positioning Tips

Shoulder Positioning

Rolling the shoulders forward moves the scapulae away from the lung fields. This improves visualization of the lateral lung margins. Proper shoulder placement reduces the need for repeat exposures. It also enhances diagnostic clarity.

Chin Elevation

The chin must be raised to prevent superimposition over the lung apices. A low chin can obscure critical anatomy. Clear apices are essential for accurate interpretation. Chin elevation is a simple but vital adjustment.

SID Optimization

Using a long source to image distance reduces heart magnification. This creates a more accurate representation of thoracic structures. Long distances also improve spatial resolution. Proper SID selection enhances image quality.

Rotation Checks

Clavicle symmetry and spinous process alignment help detect rotation. Even slight rotation can mimic pathology. Checking landmarks before exposure prevents misinterpretation. Rotation control is essential for chest imaging.
