Overview
Diatrizoate meglumine is a hyperosmolar, water soluble iodinated contrast agent used orally or rectally for GI imaging and as a therapeutic lavage in some cases.
Properties
Iodinated and water soluble, hyperosmolar relative to plasma, provides positive contrast on radiography and CT.
Uses
Preferred when bowel perforation or leak is suspected, used for small bowel follow through and contrast enemas when barium is contraindicated.
Safety
Hyperosmolarity can cause fluid shifts and electrolyte changes if aspirated or given in large volumes; use caution in dehydrated or unstable patients.
