Ferumoxytol is an ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide formulation originally developed for iron replacement and used off label for MRI contrast in select cases.
Properties
Strong T1 and T2 shortening effects depending on dose and sequence, long intravascular half life, cleared by reticuloendothelial system.
Uses
Used as an alternative MRI blood pool agent in patients where gadolinium is contraindicated and for vascular and tumor imaging in research settings.
Safety
Associated with hypersensitivity reactions and rare anaphylaxis; use under monitored conditions and consider risks when used for imaging rather than approved therapeutic indications.
