Iodine 131 Sodium Iodide

Overview

Iodine 131 sodium iodide is a radioactive iodine isotope used for diagnostic imaging and for therapeutic ablation of thyroid tissue in hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer.

Properties

I131 emits beta and gamma radiation enabling both therapeutic effect and gamma imaging; it is taken up by thyroid tissue via the sodium iodide symporter.

Uses

Used for thyroid ablation, treatment of metastatic thyroid cancer and for diagnostic whole body scans in selected protocols.

Safety

Significant radiation dose requires radiation safety measures, thyroid blockade when indicated and patient counseling on isolation and precautions after therapy.
