Clinical Practice
Technologists follow strict protocols for tracer handling timing and image acquisition to ensure quantitative accuracy. They monitor patients for adverse reactions and manage radiation protection measures. They also perform quality control on gamma cameras and PET systems.
Procedures and Tools
Equipment includes gamma cameras PET CT hybrid scanners dose calibrators and shielding devices. Procedures range from bone scans and myocardial perfusion to theranostic treatments such as radioiodine therapy. Image reconstruction and attenuation correction are key technical steps.
Training and Roles
Technologists complete accredited programs and obtain certification or licensure as required by jurisdiction. Continuing education covers radiopharmacy, radiation protection and evolving tracer applications. They may specialize in PET, SPECT or therapeutic radionuclide administration.
