Overview
Perfusionists manage heart lung machines and extracorporeal circuits to maintain circulation and oxygenation during cardiac procedures. They monitor hemodynamics blood gases and anticoagulation. Their role is critical for complex cardiac and transplant surgeries.
Clinical Practice
They prepare and prime bypass circuits, initiate and manage extracorporeal support and coordinate with surgical and anesthesia teams. They respond to intraoperative changes and manage weaning from bypass. Postoperative handover includes documentation of perfusion parameters and circuit details.
Procedures and Tools
Equipment includes cardiopulmonary bypass machines, ECMO systems, oxygenators and blood conservation devices. Perfusionists use monitoring tools for flow, pressure and gas exchange and perform circuit troubleshooting. Sterility and anticoagulation management are essential.
Training and Roles
Perfusionists complete specialized training programs and clinical apprenticeships and obtain certification in many jurisdictions. They work in operating rooms and cardiac centers and participate in emergency ECMO activations. Continuing education and simulation training maintain readiness.
