Overview

Psychiatry addresses mood psychotic anxiety and neurodevelopmental disorders using psychotherapy pharmacotherapy and community interventions. Psychiatrists evaluate biological social and psychological contributors to mental illness and coordinate multidisciplinary care. The specialty emphasizes longitudinal management, crisis intervention and recovery oriented approaches.

Clinical Practice

Care includes diagnostic assessment, medication management and psychotherapy and often integrates collaborative care with primary care and social services. Psychiatrists manage acute inpatient care for severe illness and outpatient follow up for chronic conditions. Substance use disorders and suicide risk assessment are core competencies.

Procedures and Tools

Tools include structured interviews rating scales neuroimaging when indicated and psychopharmacologic and neuromodulation therapies such as ECT and TMS. Collaborative care models and telepsychiatry expand access to underserved populations. Outcome measurement and safety planning guide treatment adjustments.

Training and Roles

Psychiatrists complete residency training and may subspecialize in child and adolescent, geriatric, addiction or forensic psychiatry. Ongoing CME and psychotherapy supervision maintain competence. Psychiatrists work in hospitals clinics correctional settings and community programs.
