Overview
Zinc is a bluish white transition metal commonly used to protect steel from corrosion and as an essential micronutrient.
Properties
It is moderately reactive, forms stable +2 compounds and alloys such as brass with copper to improve mechanical properties.
Occurrence and Uses
Zinc is mined from sphalerite and used in galvanizing, die casting, batteries, pigments and as a dietary supplement.
Isotopes and Safety
Stable isotopes include Zn 64, Zn 66; zinc compounds are generally low toxicity though inhalation of fumes can cause metal fume fever.
